This hip hop marriage weds LA and the farm, rock and rap, male, female, culture... all together.

CD PRESS RELEASE:
The number thirteen and the shape of a circle share implied spiritual qualities. For centuries, sorcerers and holy men and women have used the power of these symbols to see the future or understand the past. Lyrics here show real world pragmatism, as well. Like the Flobots video for "Handlebars", Circle 13’s "Hip Politics" video sets the tone for a ‘funsubversive’ album.

If you had seen the video for "Hip Politics" or been jamming to early cuts of the album on Myspace before seeing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull you may have been surprised. The ‘skull’ belongs to one of a "Circle of 13" leading to strength in unity. Knowledge and truth that is, perhaps, too powerful to behold? Sort of like the tongue in cheek reverse genesis scene on the cover of Circle 13’s, Come Feel This, due out September 23, 2008 , the question asks, "What if?". An ironic coincidence to say the least. From the moment you start listening, to the last note of the 13th track you see that the husband and wife duo who form Circle 13 are on a journey guided by the funk and rhythm of the cosmos.

Mixing urban beats and raps with rock female vocals on top reaches diverse audiences... we’ve played for young and old and everyone in between, and they all seem to get what we’re doing. ~Crista

The songs, beats and performances of Circle 13 appeal to a wide range of ages, cultures and genres. Combining melodic hip hop sounds with alternative riffs and sewing them together with both male and female vocals, produces a hybrid of rock/funk/rap that is near hypnotic. Brent’s beats and hard hitting lines are complimented by Crista’s cool rock vocals which reflect the power of the feminine soul, the piritualized Mother Earth. Therefore completing the circle that binds us together, bringing everything into a state of order.

In the beginning my vision was for a solo album. I asked Crista to sing a chorus on one song. After she did that chorus she had the idea to back me up in the verses...we realized right then we were good and fresh together. Soon she was involved in every aspects of the recording process. Her vocals gave every track more fullness, so we went back and added parts to all the songs. ~Brent

Circle 13 knows how to put their spirits and passion into their music. They seem to have fun with purpose crafting grooves and laying down tracks that are sometimes sweet, sometimes gritty and always a bit mysterious.

Ten years living in LA, brought its own spiritual karma. A hotbed for ideas and sounds, the city had blessed Brent and Crista with a diverse, sometimes surreal canvas to use as a backdrop for their early musical endeavors. Leaving LA and the comforts of LA Studios to write and record with the concentration, isolation and vision that rural Central Cali provides was a labor of love. Crista as co-lyricist and co-producer and Brent as producer (mixing, mastering and writing beats) gives the album a unique vision and unrushed, cohesive, quality. After all it has been four years in the making. And in fact, as you look at the CD cover and dive into the recording, you may notice that the cover artwork is actually a real painted set, not a photoshop creation. Crista painted the set on summer days when the space and light could accommodate her Theater Scene Painting style.

This dedication to making music and art the center of one’s life is evident throughout this work. There’s some natural mysticism going on here. But the magic happens in the music.
